Is there an ideal vaporization temperature?

Using different temperatures in your vaporizer will yield completely different results. By adjusting the temperature, you can influence the effect of vaporized marijuana.

Thanks to this, we can adjust the effects of inhalation to the specific situation and individual needs. How will the effect of marijuana change depending on the vaporization temperature? What vaporization temperature is best?

Temperature is the most important variable in the vaporization process. But what exactly is vaporizing marijuana? Simply put, it involves evaporating the cannabinoids contained in the herb without burning it. For vaporization to be possible, the temperature must be strictly controlled—it must be high enough to evaporate the cannabinoids, while also not exceeding the temperature at which the material could combust. What temperatures are we talking about?

Are you interested in a portable vaporizer but don't know which one to choose?

For the cannabinoids to begin evaporating, the weed must be heated to a temperature above THC's boiling point of 157°C) .

However, a slightly higher temperature is needed to release the necessary amount of cannabinoids – this should be at least 175°C. At the other end of the spectrum, we have a temperature of 230°C – above this temperature, the herb may start to burn . Combining all this information, we can draw the following conclusion: although in theory, vaporization is possible at temperatures in the range of 157–230°C, in practice, the temperatures used during vaporization range from 175–230°C .

The cheapest devices don't truly vaporize because the temperatures they reach are too high. This results in the combustion of plant material and the production of harmful smoke.

The effects of vaporizing marijuana will largely depend on the temperature at which we heat the herb. For example, to achieve a sedative or calming effect, you will need to use a different temperature than to achieve an analgesic effect. These differences arise from the different temperatures at which individual cannabinoids evaporate. The higher the vaporization temperature, the broader the spectrum of cannabinoids we absorb.

Vaporization Temperature – Basic Principles

Regarding vaporization temperatures, we can outline some basic rules. First of all, lower temperatures will result in vapor with an excellent flavor, which will also be smoother and less dense.

Applying a low vaporization temperature, within the range of 175-190°C will provide a vapor with a unique flavor and aroma, which provides only a moderately psychoactive effect and will be relatively unnoticeable – it will be similar to a fine mist.

This great taste and aroma is the result of the evaporation of terpenes—the compounds responsible for marijuana's flavor and aroma. At low temperatures, terpenes vaporize intensely, while the evaporation of cannabinoids alone will be moderately intense.

In turn, the higher the temperature we use, the more intense the evaporation of cannabinoids and the stronger the vapor. Regarding the density and quantity of vapor, it's worth noting that the vapor produced by a vaporizer consists almost exclusively of cannabinoids. Therefore, if we use a higher temperature, at which other cannabinoids will be released, we'll also obtain more visible vapor, which is important for many users. Using temperatures above 200°C, we'll be able to produce a truly massive amount of vapor—it can be so dense that it can easily be mistaken for smoke. However, even vapor generated at a temperature of 230°C will be significantly less harmful than regular smoke.

However, if we want to completely eliminate all harmful compounds from the vapor, it's better to use slightly lower temperatures. In this case, the limit is 205°C – after it is exceeded, the benzene concentration in the vapor increases. However, even at 230°C, this concentration will be many times lower than in classic .

We mentioned above that each cannabinoid evaporates at a different temperature. The higher the vaporization temperature , the broader the spectrum of cannabinoids present in the vapor.

For example, vapor generated at 180°C will contain THC and CBD, but the cannabinoid CBN (known for its sedative properties) will only be released at temperatures above 185°C. In turn, the cannabinoid THCV, responsible for the euphoric effect of marijuana, will only appear in the vapor at temperatures of 200°C or slightly higher. Of course, these are just a few examples: cannabinoids and their effects are much more. In summary, we can say that using relatively low vaporization temperatures (below 190°C) will achieve a medical effect (e.g., pain relief), but without a strong psychoactive effect.

For this reason, low vaporization temperatures are perfect during the day when we still have things to do. Higher vaporization temperatures are more recommended in the evening, which will help us fall asleep and provide a calming effect at the end of the day.

So is there an ideal vaporization temperature?

The best vaporization temperature is a very common question among vaporizer users. Experts disagree on this topic: on the one hand, to completely eliminate all harmful compounds from the vapor, it's best to use relatively low temperatures, no higher than 205 °C

On the other hand, vapor generated using temperatures around 230°C will also be significantly less harmful than regular smoke, while the higher temperature will allow more cannabinoids to evaporate, resulting in a more economical use of the herb and stronger effects.

One proponent of using lower temperatures is Dr. Ian Mitchell, who works at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. According to this researcher, temperatures in the range of 175–200°C are best for vaporizing marijuana—these temperatures allow for the inhalation of cannabinoids, eliminating virtually all harmful substances from the vapor.

Dr. Arno Hazekamp, a scientist employed as head of research at Bedrocan, which produces medical marijuana at the request of the Dutch government, is an advocate of higher temperatures. According to his research, the ideal vaporization temperature is 210°C. This temperature, according to Dr. Hazekamp, is the perfect compromise between extracting the maximum amount of cannabinoids from the plant material and minimizing the amount of undesirable substances that come with the vaporizer.

In our opinion, the best temperatures for vaporizing marijuana are between 190 and 205°C. Using temperatures in this range will allow you to consume sufficient cannabinoids while also eliminating virtually all unwanted compounds. Using these temperatures will also produce vapor so cool it won't irritate your airways or throat.

In conclusion, it's worth adding that there's no single best temperature for vaporizing marijuana—every user will find their temperature different. However, the vaporization temperature should certainly be the one best suited to the desired effects, as well as individual preferences.

It is definitely worth equipping yourself with a high-class vaporizer: vaporizer models that can work at the temperatures indicated by both researchers mentioned are, for example, the portable vaporizers Mighty + or Crafty + , which at the same time are perfectly suited for the extraction of cannabinoids contained in herbs.
